Everybody is on their hustle, trying to make some thing happen, but there is one problem with this. Forcing results is not the right way to go about handling your business. I know you’ve probably heard the saying “grass doesn’t try to grow, it just does.” That’s what it was created to do, right? We were all born for greater purpose, and we were all meant to be great.
There is no reason to force anything. If you have educated yourself, and put a plan together, all you have left to do is execute. Sounds simple, huh? I’m not saying that there isn’t a lot of work involved in whatever your project may be. I am saying, though, that you can just work your plan, instead of worrying and stressing at the same time.
If you find that something isn’t to your liking, or that something should be tweaked a bit, you can go back and make changes. When you are committed to your business, and you plan to be in this for the long haul, you shouldn’t feel the need to force anything. I know that we all want to start a business and become millionaires within the first few months, but patience is key here. Think about how it feels when things are flowing well, and then compare it to the feeling you get whenever things are slow and choppy.
Don’t force it. Be patient and work your plan. It works, I promise! One thing that gives me crazy inspiration and motivation to keep pushing is taking a periodic look back at my career so far. It’s so cool to see how far I’ve come in such a short time. That makes me want to continue on my path. With that kind of motivation and attitude, success is inevitable.
Have you been trying to force things to happen with your endeavors?
I have been in business with my husband for over 9 years now, and in that time, I have seen a lot of people destroy their new businesses. How does this happen? I’m sure that there are several reasons that this can occur, but I have noticed a pattern that I think contributes to the failure of businesses everywhere.
1 Cutting Corners
The one phrase that I have come to absolutely HATE is “all we gotta do is…” I have watched people destroy their businesses with this one phrase over and over. It implies that starting a business and gaining success is easy. It also implies that those who work day in and out on building their brands are misguided. “All we gotta do is” tells everyone listening that the person speaking has no business plan or a well thought out idea of how he/she will run the business beyond that statement.
2 Lack of Education
Some people who get the great idea to become an entrepreneur make the decision to move forward off of pure excitement, rather than taking the time to educate themselves first. Beyond the emotion of wanting to start a business, a person has to do his/her research to see how great of an idea (s)he has. There is a level of practicality that has to be considered, before an entrepreneur should move forward with any plans.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of outsourcing certain tasks within a job, but a person is sure to destroy his/her business if every aspect of it is outsourced. I have seen at least 3 companies go under, because they owner started a passion project, neglected to learn the most important parts of the business, and as a result, the doors of those businesses were closed in under 3 years. In those cases, outsourcing hindered the companies, rather than helped.
Those are the top 3 reasons that I believe contribute to businesses being destroyed before they ever get started. If you recognized yourself in any of those areas, don’t panic. You can still turn things around. Some say that knowledge is power, but applied knowledge is actually power. Now that you know, you can do something about it. Educate yourself, and make a plan for improvement. Hold onto your dream of being a successful entrepreneur.
So many of my clients come to me for entrepreneurship coaching, and while I have many tools, skills, and abilities to use to help with, there is one thing that I can’t do. I cannot do the work for them! I love coaching, but I am also running my own business. I have to do my own work.
To be very specific, most people feel that they need all of the “right” answers before they get started, but that is the very thing that will keep them standing still forever. There is no completely perfect combination of actions that can be taken that will automatically ensure success. The truth is, success comes from a person making a series of relentless decisions to achieve their goal.
Most people who seek out the services of a coach are already on the right track. They are using someone else’s experience, expertise, knowledge, and skills in order to better position themselves in their businesses. Kudos! Once you have some insight and direction, it’s time to get moving. In fact, the thing that I say the most to my new clients, is to just start. Do the work, and you will start to get a better idea of what could be altered.
Do the Work!
Don’t put too much energy into going through every little scenario in your head before you get started. Whatever the entrepreneurial endeavor is, it belongs to you. You can mold it whichever way you choose, and if you decide later that you want something different, you can change it. Nothing is set in stone. As you grow and change, your brand can evolve with you. Just get started!
Have you been stalling on a project, because you want everything to be perfect first?
I constantly say that I want to be successful and to make more money, but the moment that things start to change for the better, fear sets in. I have heard a lot about fear of success, but I didn’t know that it was a real thing, until I experienced it myself.
I’m not talking about the butterflies that I get right before I take the stage. I’m talking about a real fear. Every time I book a client and collect payment, a flood of self-doubting thoughts race into my mind. I think Oh crap! This person believes in me and is expecting me to deliver something amazing. I would never put myself out there, if I didn’t think that I could do the work and do it well. But for some reason, I feel anxious.
I work tirelessly to be sure that my client has the best experience and gets the exact results he/she was expecting or better. I haven’t had an unhappy client, but that doesn’t stop me from feeling fearful in the beginning.
So what is the fear of success? Susanne Babbel, a phychologist, believes that the feeling of the excitement of success can be very similar to the same feeling of trauma, and most people confuse the feelings and end up feeling “phobic” about success.
