If you come from a quartet singing kind of church like I did, you might have heard a song that says, “Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” That song is straight out of the scriptures…Romans 10:17, to be exact. The scripture reads, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
Does that mean that the word of God speaks to us? Yes. Well, not literally, but it speaks to our hearts. To know what God has to say to us, we have to spend time studying his word. Within the bible, we can see examples of how God has worked in other people’s lives. We can learn how to pray to him. We can learn his ways. We can understand how to prepare ourselves to be used by God.
The word hear is defined as “to perceive or apprehend by the ear”, to gain information”, and “to entertain the idea”. You can glean from the definition that hearing isn’t only done with your ears. Just as you can get to know a person through reading his/her thoughts in a diary or journal, you can get to know God through his word.
This is why it is important to “listen up” to what God has to say to us. It sets us up for success, when we know his word and his ways. Whenever someone says something, or tries to convince you of something — if you know God’s word — you can test their words against God’s and determine whether or not that person is being honest and right, or if they are presenting something outside of God’s will.
Wisdom Wednesday “Listen Up”
This week’s lesson is all about hearing what God wants to say to us. We have access to his word. We just have to put forth the effort to seek his face, through spending time in the word. I talk a lot about gaining an understanding. That is because it is important, if we are building a relationship with God through his word. It is not healthy or wise to only take what someone else tells you as the truth. You should know for yourself.
