What Does It Mean To Build A Relationship With God?
Building a relationship with God is simple in understanding, but more involved in execution. If you desire to build a relationship with God, or strengthen your current relationship with God, you have to spend time with Him, listen to Him, and study Him.
To build a relationship with God, much like with any other person, you have to get to know Him. So, how do you get to know God? You get to know God by becoming acquainted with His word. You should view the Bible as God’s journal. Everything you need to know about God, how He feels, what He desires, what He’s done, etc. is recorded in the scriptures. When you dig in and sincerely learn all you can about Him through His word, you will find that you grow closer to God.

Similar to getting closer to a human being, if you want to build a relationship with God, you should spend time with Him, ask questions, have a conversation, and be intentional about it. Talking with God should never be an awkward encounter. It should also not be a selfish session where you are just asking for things you want in life. You wouldn’t consider a person a good friend if when you saw them they only spent time asking you for things. Would you?
How To Spend Time With God
One way to spend time with God is to take the time to read and study the Bible. You can also spend time with God in prayer. This is when you speak directly with God. Don’t forget that part of talking with God is listening. So, be sure to spend some time in silence as well to allow God the opportunity to speak to you.
Another way you can spend time with God is by singing worship songs. The Bible says to “come into His presence with singing” (Psalm 100:2). Listening to and singing worship songs can be done while doing a variety of things, but if you are interested in being very intentional about the time you spend with God, it may be better if you set aside some uninterrupted time to spend with Him.
Yielding To The Holy Spirit
As a believer, you have God’s seal of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit guides and teaches you, if you allow him to (1 John 2:27). In addition to studying God’s word and spending time with Him, you should keep a sensitive ear that is always listening for God’s voice. When the Holy Spirit speaks, you will be able to hear and respond accordingly.
Let’s talk about how to hear God’s voice. If you are a newcomer to Christ, you may not be familiar with what it means to hear God speak to you. It is not an audible voice. Instead, it can be one or more of the following instances:
1. You receive a thought that speaks to you about what you talked to God about.
2. You have a conversation with someone and they say something that is directly related to what you talked to God about.
3. You observe a situation that is related to what you talked to God about and it gives you revelation.
4. You come across something in the scriptures that is directly related to what you talked to God about, and it seems to have your answer or understanding.
There are many ways to hear from God. You simply have to be watchful in order to catch it.
